Om Saravana Bhava!
One of the most profound and celebrated days for devotees of Lord Murugan is Vaikasi Visakam. This auspicious day marks the Avatar (incarnation) of Lord Murugan, born to vanquish the darkness of ignorance and restore Dharma.
In 2026, we celebrate Vaikasi Visakam on Saturday, May 30th. It is a time for all devotees to come together and celebrate the birth of the Lord of Wisdom, Beauty, and Valour.
The Legend: The Birth from Divine Sparks
The story of Vaikasi Visakam is the story of divine intervention. When the demon Soorapadman terrorized the three worlds, the Devas appealed to Lord Shiva for salvation. In response, Lord Shiva emitted six powerful sparks from his third eye.
These sparks were too intense for even the gods to handle. They were carried by Vayu (Wind) and Agni (Fire) to the holy Ganges, and finally to the Saravana Poigai (Lake of Reeds). There, the sparks transformed into six divine babies, cared for by the six Karthigai Pengal (maidens).
On this holy day, Goddess Parvati embraced the six babies, merging them into one six-faced form: Arumugan (The Six-Faced Lord). Thus, Murugan was born not of a womb, but of pure divine wisdom (Jnana).
Why We Celebrate
Vaikasi Visakam is not just a birthday; it is a celebration of the arrival of the Guru. Lord Murugan is known as Swaminatha, the one who taught the secret of “Om” (Pranava Mantra) even to his father, Lord Shiva. Worshipping him on this day is believed to:
- Remove ignorance and confusion from our minds.
- Grant success in education and learning for children.
- Bless childless couples with progeny (Santhana Bhagyam).
- Eliminate debts and enemies.
