Why Tuesdays are Special for Lord Murugan

Om Saravana Bhava!

If you visit any Murugan temple around the world, you will notice a surge of devotees on Tuesdays. Whether it is Palani in India or our own Texas Murugan Temple in Austin, Tuesdays carry a unique vibration for the worship of the Divine Son of Shiva. But have you ever wondered why?

The significance of Tuesday, or Chevvai in Tamil, is deeply rooted in Vedic astrology and ancient Puranic legends.

The Planetary Connection: Lord of Mars

In Vedic Astrology (Jyothish), every day of the week is ruled by a planet. Tuesday is ruled by Mars (known as Angaraka or Chevvai). Mars is the planet of energy, strength, courage, and command.

Lord Murugan is considered the presiding deity (Adhipathi) of Mars. He is the Commander-in-Chief of the celestial army (Deva Senapathi). Therefore, worshipping Murugan on Tuesdays helps to appease the planet Mars and channel its intense energy in a positive direction.

The Legend of Angaraka

According to legend, the planet Mars (Angaraka) was once afflicted by a curse and suffered from a terrible skin ailment. He performed intense penance (Tapas) to please Lord Murugan. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Murugan appeared before him, cured his illness, and blessed him.

As a mark of gratitude, Angaraka declared that anyone who worships Lord Murugan on his day—Tuesday—would be blessed with health, strength, and prosperity. This is why the “Vratam” (fasting) dedicated to Murugan is often observed on Tuesdays.

Benefits of Tuesday Worship

Devotees believe that participating in Tuesday poojas or observing a fast on this day brings powerful benefits:

  • Removing Chevvai Dosham: For those with Mars afflictions (Mangal Dosha/Chevvai Dosham) in their horoscope, which can delay marriage or cause family discord, Tuesday worship is the ultimate remedy.
  • Clearing Debts: Murugan is the giver of abundance. Worshipping him with the Rina Vimochana prayer on Tuesdays is believed to help clear financial debts (Rina).
  • Courage and Health: It grants the mental strength to face challenges and cures physical ailments related to blood and heat.
