Om Saravana Bhava!
In the vibrant tapestry of Tamil spirituality, few days are as auspicious for relationships and family harmony as Panguni Uthiram. Celebrated when the full moon coincides with the Uthiram star in the Tamil month of Panguni, this festival marks the day of divine weddings.
In 2026, Panguni Uthiram falls on Wednesday, April 1st. It is a day celebrated across South Indian temples as the ultimate union of the masculine and feminine divine energies.
The Legend: A Day of Celestial Weddings
Panguni Uthiram is unique because it is believed that most divine marriages took place on this specific astrological alignment. It is the day Lord Murugan married Deivayanai, the daughter of Indra (the King of Devas), symbolizing the union of the soul with the power of action (Kriya Shakti).
The significance of this day extends beyond Lord Murugan. It is also celebrated as the wedding day of:
- Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (Gowri Kalyanam).
- Lord Rama and Goddess Sita.
- Lord Ranganathar and Goddess Andal.
Because of these divine unions, observing a fast (Vratam) on this day and witnessing the Thirukalyanam (Divine Wedding Ceremony) is believed to remove obstacles in marriage and bring longevity and happiness to married couples.
Rituals and Significance
Devotees observe strict fasting on this day, consuming only water or milk, and break their fast after witnessing the wedding ceremony of the deities in the evening. It is also a significant day for carrying the Kavadi and Palkudam for Lord Murugan, similar to Thaipoosam.
At the Austin Murugan Temple, the highlight of the day is the grand Thirukalyanam of Lord Murugan and Deivayanai. Seeing the Lord in his wedding attire (Alankaram) is considered to wash away sins and bless the devotee with prosperity.
